Black Seeded Simpson-
Black Seeded Simpson was one of the first lettuce varieties to be deemed an 'heirloom' in the middle years of the 19th century. This looseleaf variety is also one of the fastest lettuces to maturity, completing its growth cycle within 45-60 days. Baby greens can be harvested in less than a month after germination in many growing environments. Black Seeded Simpson is also one of the more durable greens, and will show good resistance to heat, cold, infestation and other potential problems. The light-green leaves are especially juicy, and are suitable for salad and other dishes. Space plants 6" apart, with 12" between rows.
Ruby-
Looseleaf type lettuces do not form a compact head, and are cultivated for the tender, delicate leaves which grow from a central stalk. They usually reach maturity between 45-55 days after germination, though larger leaves can be collected throughout the growth cycle. Like other lettuces, looseleaf types can be sensitive to excessive heat and light, which may result in bolting, or wilting leaves. This variety is commonly used in salads and sandwiches. Space plants 6" apart, with 12" between rows.
Rouge d' Hiver -
This heirloom from France is widely recognized. It is a romaine variety with medium-red leaves that have a delightful taste. It regrows well and can withstand cold temperatures, though it may not fare as well in hot weather.

ButterCrunch-
Butterhead type lettuces are known for their 'buttery' taste and velvety texture, and small loosely formed heads. Relative to most other lettuce types, Butterheads are slightly more tolerant of heat. Even so, they are best planted early or late in the season in spring, away from the intense summer sun. They may be started indoors several weeks prior to the last frost of the season. Partial shade, or a location that receives primarily eastward exposure may be helpful if growing in summer. Butterheads usually need between 55-60 days to reach maturity, so plan your plantings accordingly. Leaves can be collected throughout the growing cycle. Space plants 10-12" apart with 12" between rows.
Freckles-

The tender leaves boast exceptional flavor, and the heads take longer to go to seed. This intriguing cultivar is ideally suited for selling in fresh markets and can be used in various mixes.
