The Chabaud carnation, which originated in the Mediterranean, emits a sweet and spicy clove scent and has frilly double blooms in shades of pale pink. It blooms from late July to August and is best grown as an annual for cut-flower production. This old-fashioned variety dates back to 1904 and is also known as an annual carnation. Its grass-like foliage is gray or blue-green in color. While it is a tender perennial in Zones 6–8, it is typically grown as an annual. The petals of this flower can be used to garnish salads, desserts, soups, icing, and cold drinks. However, it is important to remove the petals from the flower base before consuming, as the base can be quite bitter.
