Experience the delightful scent of a classic French garden variety. Vintage carnations emit a captivating aroma reminiscent of clove, with a combination of sweet and spicy notes. These charming blooms feature frilly, double petals measuring 1 1/2–2 inches in diameter, with a small percentage of single blooms. The petals are predominantly white to creamy white, accented by a delicate rose-colored edge. The foliage is characterized by its grass-like appearance, with hues ranging from gray to blue-green. Our trials have shown that this variety blooms from late July through August, making it ideal for annual cut-flower production. Chabaud carnations are an old-fashioned type that can be traced back as early as 1904. Originating from the Mediterranean region, this flower holds significant emotional value. It is also referred to as the annual carnation. To pronounce the name correctly, say "shab-o" with a long "o" sound, followed by "ben-eeg-na." In Zones 6–8, this tender perennial can thrive. In addition to their aesthetic appeal, these carnations can also be used in culinary applications. The flower petals make beautiful garnishes for salads, desserts, soups, icing, and cold drinks. They impart a mild clove flavor that adds a unique touch to your dishes. Before consuming the petals, it is important to remove them from the flower base, as the base can have a bitter taste.
