Lima Bean
Fordhook 242
Fordhook 242-
A winner of the AAS award over 60 years ago, this variety of lima beans continues to be the benchmark in terms of quality. It is not only early to produce, but also offers a delightful taste. With its large seeds and white color, it stands out as the top choice among bush beans.
SCIENTIFIC NAME:
Phaseolus lunatus
CULTURE:
Sow about 3" apart, 1" deep in rows 18–36" apart, after soil is at least 75°F (24°C).
HARVEST:
Pick for fresh shelling when beans are plump and bulge inside pods.
NOTE:
Limas require more heat than regular bush beans, and will bear poorly in a cool growing season. Optimal soil temperature for germination is around 85°F (29°C) and the optimal ambient temperature for growing plants is 70–80°F (21–27°C). Choose a warm, well-drained location.
